National Disaster Resilience Competition
Encouraging communities who have already experienced disasters to learn from their experiences and to consider how they are reducing future risks and advancing broader community development goals is the focus of the National Disaster Resilience Competition. This is an initiative of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, in collaboration with the Rockefeller Foundation. After a two-stage process, nearly $1 billion will be awarded to eligible communities.
The first phase invited communities to frame their recovery needs, and to identify their risks, vulnerabilities, and community development opportunities. In June 2015, 26 states, six counties and parishes, seven cities, and Puerto Rico were selected to participate in the second phase. They have been asked to articulate a resilience-enhancing disaster recovery or revitalization project or program that addresses the needs previously identified, with the expectation that, if successful, they will receive awards of between $1 million and $500 million.
